Service Description

A fun-filled introduction to engineering! Weekly 1-hour sessions each explore a different engineering discipline through guided design and building of simple engineering devices. WEEKS 1-2: Mechanical Engineering - Candy Catapults: Build a mini working catapult! Explore concepts of accuracy, precision, and potential and kinetic energy. - Tidy Bots: Build a robot that can sweep the floor! Explore the engineering design process and how to improve designs for a better robot. WEEK 3: Chemical Engineering - Playful Polymers: Create chemical concoctions! Explore the concept of polymerization and how it works to create slime and playdough. WEEKS 4-5: Aerospace Engineering - Lunar Lander/ Parachutes: Design and build a vehicle that can protect cargo when falling from a great height! Explore concepts of durability, air resistance, and gravity. - Straw Rockets: Design, build, and launch mini rockets! Explore how the parts of a rocket affect how far it can travel. WEEK 6: Civil Engineering - Marshmallow Bridge: Construct a strong bridge out of not-so-strong materials! Explore trusses and how to create efficient designs with limited materials. WEEKS 7-8: Electrical Engineering - Variable Resistor: Build a working flashlight! Explore concepts of current and resistors. - Light-Up Greeting Card: Create and decorate a greeting card with a light up feature! Explore concepts of circuits and conductivity. Recommended for ages 6-12.
